This Website focuses on the philanthropy of Milton S. and Catherine S. Hershey. The Hershey Family is one of the most unique attributes of their philanthropy. However, the Hershey Family is only one attribute of a very intelligent and multifaceted children’s home created by the Hersheys, which children’s home combined community, business and education so as to ensure the full development of each indentured, dependent child as a whole person according to each such dependent child’s unique “taste, capacity, intelligence, and adaptability.”
As a Mennonite, Milton Hershey believed strongly that God intended each of us to be unique. Designing, implementing and improving the means through which to fully develop each child as a whole person and providing each of them with opportunity to succeed in life is the Hersheys’ philanthropy. The Hershey Family was established to serve as the unique source, and the continued inspiration, of shared and enduring identity, tradition, loyalty and purpose, as well as a central component in providing a real home for each of the dependent children admitted to the School. Every member of the Hershey Family has some ongoing, life-long responsibility for the long term heath and development of the Hershey Family, referred to among its members as the “Milton Hershey School Family” or the “School Family”. The School Family is not designed to replace, nor compete with, biological families. Rather, it is designed to supplement them. The School Family is a core resource of the Milton Hershey School Trust and an important components of the School because it is the source of shared and enduring identity, tradition, loyalty and purpose, which serve to make the Hersheys’ Children’s Home the very best – not only as a children’s home but also as a family.
